“OpenAI said on Friday that Sam Altman had been sacked as CEO. The release board’s extensive investigation revealed that Altman’s actions did not exhibit any pattern of systematic misconduct, and as a result, the board expressed confidence in his leadership moving forward,” the company wrote on its blog.

With immediate effect, the company has appointed Meera Murthi as interim CEO and chief technology officer. Meanwhile, they are actively seeking a permanent CEO. “My time at OpenAI has been immensely gratifying, personally transformative, and I hope to make a small positive dent in the universe,” Altman wrote in a personal post on X, formerly Twitter.
Recent announcements from the company also revealed that co-founder and chairman Greg Brockman will leave his position as chairman while continuing to work for the company. As stated in the official statement, there appears to be a lack of trust in Altman’s leadership among the board, though.
The course of these recent events was not what was expected. With the widely welcomed release of ChatGPT in recent years, Altman, the face of OpenAI, spearheaded important advances in AI. Leading the company’s inaugural DevDay conference in recent weeks, Altman revealed significant updates to rival other tech behemoths like Microsoft and Google. In addition, Altman showcased his varied engagements by speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
While downplaying rumors, Altman stressed that he was working with former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive to create the “iPhone of artificial intelligence” during the Wall Street Journal conference. Notably, Ive also holds a sizable stake in Altman’s other venture, Humane, which just announced the launch of its Humane AI initiative.
As co-chair of the company at first, Altman and Elon Musk were co-founders of OpenAI. In 2018, he worked with Musk to stay out of Tesla’s conflict of interest. He then established his AI business, xAI.
In contrast to conventional corporate boards, the majority of OpenAI’s board members are outsiders. After Altman and Brockman left, the board now consists of Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, CEO of Quora Adam D’Angelo, former CEO of GeoSim Systems Tasha McCauley, and Director of the Georgetown Center for Security and Strategy Udayon Mukherjee.”
